Black History is Philadelphia History – celebrate it with us this February at the Philadelphia Museum of Art! For the entire month, we’re exploring how local Philadelphians are reimagining creative traditions found throughout the African Diaspora. From the various works by Black artists on view in our galleries to our robust line-up of programming, our aim is to dive deeper into the legacy of Black cultural expression. We invite you to check-out our events and programs happening all month long. See below for more information about Black History Month at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Artist Statement:

All Praise Due, 2024, highlights a moment of Black history when Black communities celebrated one another by their own standards, independent of the white gaze. The source image was taken at the 1955 Miss Paradise Park pageant. Paradise Park opened in 1949 as a tourist attraction for African Americans only. The park was located just south of Silver Springs, Florida, and stayed in operation until the late 1960s.
